Yojiro-Inari-Jinja shrine is next to the Hachiman-Akita-Jinja shrine in the Senshu Park. The fox express messenger "Yojiro" is enshrined here.
Senshu Park had been called Mt. Shinmei-yama in old times, and there were few people who lived there because had been rough.
However, 300-year-old fox lived here. The fox visited Mr. Satake Yoshinobu who was the first lord in Akita Domain and built a new castle on the mountain. The fox said, "I'm in trouble because I have lost a place to live by the lord's fortification. I want you to give the place where I live by lord's power. If this wish is realized, I must be useful for the lord. "
Because Mr. Yoshinobu had thought the fox to be poor, he gave the living in the fox. And, the fox was called "Yojiro".
Yojiro worked hard at the loyal service as the express messenger. He was able to shuttle between Edo and Akita in only six days.
However, he was had a grudge by other express messengers who lost work and rival in love. He was wiled by using the rat that had fried in oil, fox's Favorite food. Finally, he was assassinated in Rokuda-mura village (now Higashine City, Yamagata Prefecture). According to one estimate, he had known the Tokugawa shogunate to be a ninja of the Akita clan, and he was killed by the ninja of the shogunate.
He was buried by Ms. Ohana who was her lover. However, the misfortune happened one after another in the village. Villagers thought that it were curses of Yojiro. And they feared it very much. It was said that the shogunate that thought about the serious state had decided Yojiro to be enshrined to the shrine in the village.
Now, Yojiro is revered as a god of sports, marriage and business.
