Geocache Description:

This Geocache is located on the Cypress Swamp nature trail in Highlands Hammock State Park. Please replace the cache exactly as found. This cache is located at the end of the catwalk. You're looking for a small watertight container. If you can not go on the catwalk (wheelchair, stroller, or if you're scared) this cache can be accessed by following the trail backward from near the trail head.

The catwalk is a historical staple in Highlands Hammock. The North section of the catwalk was originally created for grove workers who needed safe passage between the orange groves. The parking lot for this trail was at one time an orange grove and two more groves were located on the West side of the swamp (or Charlie Creek). The grove workers either had a long walk around the swamp to avoid gator danger or needed a safe short cut over the gators. Also, the original latrines for the park were located about 100ft East of the end of the catwalk. The original catwalk was much narrower than it is today and was expanded to loop around when the nature trail was created.

This geocache is placed in Highlands Hammock State Park with the permission of park management. All locations must be approved by the Volunteer Geocache Coordinator Sarah Straub (DTISarah@gmail.com) and adhere to the guidelines set by the park for geocache placement.

Vehicles are not permitted to park on any roadway within the park boundary. All vehicles must park within designated parking areas. The park is open from 8:00AM until sundown, 365 days a year. The admission fees are as follows: $6.00 per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle. $4.00 Single Occupant Vehicle. $2.00 Pedestrians, bicyclists, extra passengers, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass. Camping is available in the park as well.
