This is the site of Ardley Castle or rather what's left of it! There is something magical about castles and I am sure everyone loves to walk round them and imagine what life was like then...I know I do! Parking can be found at N 51.56.651 W 001.12.964 but please don't block the drives. You then have a few 100 yds walk up the road (not the Castle Fields close)to the entrance to the castle field through the woods.
Unfortunately Ardley Castle is thought to have been an adulterine castle erected in the reign of King Stephen and demolished by order of Henry II after 1154. It now consists of an oval enclosure with a shallow ditch.
An Adulterine castle is one built without Royal permission.
Civil war broke out in England and raged between 1139 and 1153, forming a turbulent period in which the rival factions of King Stephen and the Empress Matilda struggled for power.During this time lots of castles were built by Barons to protect their land as their was no Royal soldiers to protect it for them as they were fighting on either side for the battle of the throne.
When Henry II sat on the throne he started to pull down all of these "unauthorised" castles systematically leaving us today with just a remnant of what once was.
You are looking for a 50mmx100mm camod container with a screw lid. Please note all the additional waypoints as these will make things easier for you.
FTF Honours go to Go Catch congratulations!
