Remins of Longstone Manor.
Some time before 1390, Herbert de Cumba’s title as Lord of the manor of Shittlestor (now Sheepstor), was inherited by his relatives, the Scudamors family.
John Scudamore, born 1433 had only two daughters and one of these, Johanna married John Elford, the Manorial title passing through her to the Elford family. The family is still remembered in the name of nearby Yelverton (formerly ‘Ye Elford Town’)
At 220 metres (722 feet) above sea level, the original Manor House at Longstone was probably built in 1500 by John and Johanna’s son, another John Elford who died in 1517.
A succession of Elford owned the manor. The fifth John Elford died in 1584. In 1587 his widow Elizabeth, married Thomas Drake, brother for heir to Sir Frances Drake.
Longstone was to remain in Elford hands however, as her son Walter, only 8 when his mother married Thomas, inherited his father’s estates, including Longstone.
It was probably Walter who had the house re-built 1633, much of the former substantial house being converted into pig styes, cow sheds and stables. The 1633 house had a major modernization in Georgian times, and it is mainly the result of that modernization which is evident in the ruins today. The remains of the door and a stable entrance along the old access road to the left, and the mullioned window are probably both from the house of 1500 AD.
In 1637 a John Elford built the Wind Strew threshing platform nearby, now the last remaining one in the U.K.
The Elfords continued to live here until 1748. Longstone then became a farm.
When the dam was being built in 1895, the farm was abandoned, and to save on the rates the roof was removed. Much of the stone has since been ‘quarried’ for other buildings, although recent consolidation of the remaining walls has ensured that all has not been lost.
