Down The Pan Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

fullerg: This is a very sad day as we have had to archive this cache. The area is being developed by the new landowner to make housing.

It may be sometime before this happens, but the ground has now been leveled and the concrete sewage works broken up. Thankfully we managed to remove the cache just before its hidey hole was smashed to smithereens.

RIP Down the Pan.....we will try to relocate the cache to a safer area, but it will probably require a new name.

Thanks to all who visited and especially those who found it.

Geocache Description:

Pex Hill had seen quarrying activity since 16th century and from this came the Pex Hill Resevoirs (United Utilities) the oldest remaining dated 1878. The quarry has not been worked for more than 100 years and nowadays the abandoned quarry is used for climbing activity. There are a series of footpaths and bridleways making many pleasant walks around the Cronton area leading to Rainhill and north Widnes.

The Cache is situated in a disused water treatment plant and can be approached from several directions.
1. The easiest is to park in the car park at Pex Hill and walk (approx ¼ mile).

2. You can also park in a lay-by on the A57 at Rainhill just off junction 7 of M62. Walk across the roundabout to a footpath taking great care as you cross over the motorway slip road access etc, and through bike let/ path marked - 3/4mile to Pex Hill.

3. Drive down Norlands Lane as far as possible, there is plenty of roadside parking, go through gate and follow road to meet with footpath(2) coming from Rainhill.

Although this is a nice walk for everyone, including families, the path is not really suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Some care should be taken on stony ground and boots or sturdy footwear is recommended. The ground may be slightly muddy after heavy rainfall. There is no need to climb into any of the cisterns, but some care should be taken.

The cache is a medium clip lock box in camo bag.
