Bentonsport really is a "little town that time forgot." Much of it is unchanged from the days when steamboats plied the Des Moines River. Few people live here now but they occupy a small collection of stately brick homes. Unusual shops are open throughout the summer, selling crafts, artwork, gifts and fudge. For a mind-blowing experience, check out the Indian artifacts museum. Walk through the peaceful rose garden, set in the massive foundation of a long-gone mill. Visit the church on the hill or stay in one of several charming cottages and homes, including the Mason House, one of the few remaining steamboat hotels on the river. Then walk across the old iron bridge where you might find another cache.
