The listed coordinates are the BEGINNING of a small history tour through this small town. If there's one thing Tavistock is known for, it's cheese! The cache is best done on foot or bicycle. It is a small hike. It may be done by automobile, but a different route may be necessary.
"The original frame building which housed the Tavistock Cheese Company was built by Thomas Ballantyne and William Gillard in 1878. It was also home for the first Dairy School in Ontario operated by A. T. Bell."
"The cheese and buttermilking process was documented in 1925 when the Tavistock factory was honoured in having the greatest percentage of special grade cheese of any factory in Canada. That year, 99.5 per cent of the cheese produced by the company was graded No. I" (Crossroads In Time – A pictorial history of Tavistock, William J. Gladding, 69)
Your journey begins at a place of historical significance. Feel free to visit during the posted hours. From here you should head to the north. On your right you will notice a building that has under-gone contruction and made into seniors' apartments. You will be passing the new location of what was contained in this building on your journey. You will soon find out why traveling on foot or bicycle will turn out to be beneficial as you will be entering a street where cars may not pass! If you are in a vehicle, you will have to head around the block!
On your left you will see a monument with some history of the town attached. Take the time to read about the founder of this small community. From here you will need to change bearings and head very sharply southwest. It may be to your benefit to cross to the northern end of this road as you will be going past a place which is a carrier of... CHEESE!
Not much further past this point is the new location of what WAS contained in the seniors' apartment building you passed earlier (Hint: A cache is located there
). Continuing on, you will eventually notice a large piece of history in a window on your right... a bright red truck. If you look south across the street at this location, you will see another place which uses plenty of... CHEESE!
It is now necessary to resume your course on the street heading northward. Within a short distance you will discover to your left, yet another place which carries... CHEESE!
Switch your bearings to a westerly direction from here, being sure to keep on the southern end of the road. A small trek will take you out past a memorial of heroes on your left. You will also see open fields where there are public gatherings on occasion. Going beyond these landmarks you will notice on your right one of the biggest things the town is known for. And, of course, it involves... CHEESE!
Exactly on the opposite end of the road as the entrance to this location, you will discover what you made this historical little journey for - No, not CHEESE...the cache!!!
PS..... This is my FIRST attempt at placing a Letterbox Hybrid cache. Please give your opinions as far as stamp, directions, placement, etc. THANKS!
