Geocache Description:

A walk along a flat beach.

The sea is at war with the land. It is a war of destruction and attrition. Twice a day the sea advances and the waves attack. And the rock at the margins of the land faces this onslaught.

At this earthcache location you are going to see some of the results of the sea’s attack – it is called erosion. To log this site you will have to answer some questions about what you see.
At this site there is a natural archway that has been opened up by the waves.

Question 1 What are the approximate height and width of the archway?

Question 2 – What evidence can you see of past erosion of the rock here? Can you explain what might have happened.

Question 3 - If you look at the rocks overhanging the archway can you explain what you think will happen in the future? What might cause this to happen?

Question 4 - If you stand on the beach near the archway, you are standing on the final output of the erosion process. What is it called?

Question 5 - Count the waves! Use a watch to time how many waves come in during five minutes. Then multiply that number by 12 to find out how many waves that would be in one hour. Finally multiply the number of waves in one hour by 24 to discover how many waves in one day. What is your answer? How many waves a day?

This is the cause of erosion. The slow, but never ending attack of the sea on the land.
