Geocache Description:

A small cache in an obscure mining area near Murmungee

The Weone Mine ( see (visit link) , and Waypoint 1 below) until recently had some very well-preserved old mining relics, including a wooden water-wheel. All these seem to have gone now, victim to recent fires, though you will still come across many old pieces of iron.
The actual Star Reef mine is well up the creek from the waterwheel site and near a big adit driven into the hillside - explore at your own risk!
As far as I know you can reach by vehicle the Weone workings up Ellen Lane off the Beechworth-Myrtleford Rd - we parked at the gate just past the green-roofed house and walked up the track to the edge of the forest. This track is shown as a road reserve on maps.
It's a pleasant if sometimes strenuous walk up the creek from the Weone machinery relics to Star Reef - admire the many quartz veins in the rocks, some undoubtedly with gold in them.
Cache when placed was a small Systema container with a few coins, logbook and small pencil.
Have fun exploring this little-known mining area!
