The Mysterious Lone Grave

Henry Dosher lies buried here in a lone grave just off New Union Church road between Urania and Tullos , two small towns in La Salle Parish. At the time of his death on 1 May 1902 , he was reportedly teaching school at the New Union Church School which makes one wonder why this place of burial was selected. It well could have been his house place but an exhaustive search of the records doesn’t show any land ownership by him. Why Henry is buried here, less than a mile from the well maintained cemetery at New Union Church which was in existence at the time of his death is a mystery.
He was born on 25 March 1843 and even the place of his birth remains a mystery as some information list his birth in Dorum Germany while other data list it as Catahoula Parish, La. He first married Fannie Savage 8 March 1866 in Catahoula Parish and she died before 15 January 1879 when old Henry then married Mary Jane Torrey who was born 22 June 1857 and died 26 November 1915. Mary Jane is buried in The Crowville Cemetery, Franklin Parish.
Mysterious lone graves are really not that uncommon around these parts. Three miles east of this site lies Miss Sarah Alexander at a site called Mountain Hill or Bay Springs. Sarah was born 21, September, 1828 and died on 23, February, 1891. The story was told that on her death bed she wished to be buried as close to Heaven as possible. So, that being the highest hill for miles around, was the chosen site.
About ten miles due south , in the Big Bend area of Little River at a place called the Gotch is the single grave of John Sr. and John Jr. Schmidt. It was said John Sr. had a rather large boat which he used to help supply southern forces during the Civil War. Fearing late reprisal for his involment he decided to burn his boat in the back waters of Little River. On 1 July 1898 John Jr. had some type seizure and fell in the water. John Sr. tried to rescue his son but he too drowns. Both were buried in a single grave with a four foot granite marker and over looking the site of the burned boat. This is one of the most remote areas of La Salle Parish.
Five miles west of the Henry Dosher grave is where little Miss Maude May Floyd was laid to rest. On 12, July, 1906, ten year old Maude May was playing in her front yard when she was struck by lightning. She was buried in the yard on the northeast side of her house. Like so many of the homesteads in the area they sold out to the big timber companies and the families moved on leaving behind loved ones. Maude May’s grave is well kept by oil workers and an occasional visitor.
There is the story of a hunter who came upon a young girl walking along this road late one night. She accepted his offer for a ride and his coat because it was cold and damp from the night air. As they drove along she told him she had been to a friend’s house for a party and that she lived close by. When they came to a dim side road she said stop, that it was only a short walk to her house. With a giggle and a light kiss on his cheek, she was out of the car and gone. Passing in the cars lights she gave him a big smile and farewell wave, then giggling, disappeared into the night. The next day he returned making several trips back and forth along this desolate road hoping to find the little girls house and his coat. As he turned into a dim side road he saw his coat hanging just to the right of an old oil well location. When he picked up his coat he found it was hanging on the grave marker of a young girl.
