Until recently this little parkette was little more than just a bench to sit and wait for the bus. The city has done a great job fixing it up to make it a proper historic site.
The history:
In 1914, Fr. Boleslaw Sperski initiated a continuous Polish ministry at St. Mary’s Church, located at the crossroads of Niagara, Garnet and Currie Streets, which also served the Italian Community
In 1937, St. Mary’s Church was officially renamed Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
In 1946, the first wave of Polish demobilized soldiers arrived in St. Catharines. In 1949, Archbishop James McGuigan of the Archdiocese of Toronto charged the Oblate Fathers of Mary Immaculate to undertake the pastoral ministry of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
On January 17, 1951, by decree of His Eminence Cardinal McGuigan, Our Lady of Perpetual Help became a new independent ethnic parish. The same year, a sod breaking ceremony blessed the ground on which the parish’s church would be built (now 5 Oblate Street)
