Geocache Description:

Definitely not your average drive-by cache. A decent walk along an unmarked and overgrown track with plenty of gorse and cutty-grass is involved. BYO pen. Best done in conjunction with GC367PJ. Cool views, lots of pig sign, gorse and cutty grass. Hard yakka.

Orokawa Scenic Reserve is north of Waihi Beach, and comprises of 145 hectares of native bush. Dogs, horses, vehicles (including bicycles and motorbikes), fires, removal of plants or animals, camping or hunting are not permitted.

While taking a look at the area in google earth, I noticed an unmarked track in the aerial photos. This track is available for download as a GPX file (right click - save link as...).

Enable it on your GPS and follow it to the cache and beyond. All the usual disclaimers apply regarding file downloads - use at your own risk, virus check it, etc.

If you do follow the full track, you will meet some farmland at the top of the reserve. Permission has NOT been sought to enter the farmland, and there is no requirement to do so. Please stay on the bush side of the fence. Alternatively, take the direct route from the beach - much steeper, but shorter. The GPX track was walked from GC367PJ, and the last part down to the William Wright Falls track was pretty much a direct route with lots of bum-sliding. I don't recommend trying to follow the gpx track in the reverse direction! If you do take your own direct route from the beach, climb the extra bit and get to the trig for an awesome view. See attached photos.

I did a maintenance check today (09/05/2019). Cache was still in place. I was surprised how things have changed since I was last here. There is now a good track up to the farmland that is well marked. A couple of styles cross the fence. Please keep to the fenceline between them. Then another marked track will take you to the trig station. From there it is 150 metre on a bush bash track to GZ. I have moved the cache by about 1 metre in order to make it easier to find. Enjoy the view while signing the log. The round trip took me 3 hrs from car to car.
