Artifacts - Electricity Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

GuelphHiker: The encampment of homeless people remains at this relatively isolated site and it looks like it will be there for some time to come. So it seems appropriate to archive the cache. They evidently need the site for a home more than I need it for a cache. If the area gets cleaned up at some point, I might place a new cache in the area.

Geocache Description:

The "Artifacts" caches bring you to artifacts of a farm that was once on this property. It was a training farm for the Ontario Reformatory (which has since closed).

This area has the largest stand of naturalized lilacs in Guelph. So it is particularly attractive in May when the lilacs are in bloom. This is a favourite dog walking area and you will almost certainly meet other hikers, dog walkers, joggers, and cyclists as you tour the area. The cache site reflects the arrival of electricity at the farm. The overhead wires are no longer in use. The trail to the cache follows what was once a farm laneway. If you proceed about 25 metres past the cache you will come to the site of a bridge that once connected this farm to the rest of the Ontario Reformatory on the opposite side of the Eramosa River.

Parking is usually available at the trailhead (N 43 32.965 W 080 13.182). Follow the gently sloping main trail until you are you reach the trail junction (N 43 33.132 W 080 12.686). You do have to cross railway tracks going to and returning from this cache. However, this track is used infrequently by slow freight trains and an occasional tourist train. No fast trains use this track. The cache is a steel ammo can.
