Geocache Description:

A quick grab and go..Family friendly at 3000 ft elevation of the beautiful North Ga Mtns..close to Vogel SP.

Historic road SR 180 at Forest Service 107 (West Wolf Creek Rd). Close to Scenic Sosebee Cove Wildflower Area. More shall be revealed.
Here is the bonus challenge. Flying Pig of Georgia Cache Team has a cache at the top of the mountain at Wolf pen Gap(about a mile). This cache is on an old Forest Service Road. Down the road about 6/10s of a mile is remnant of an pre 1970s Telephone Pole and metal cabinet with a placard stamped Standard Telephone and the picture icon of an old Rotary (1940s) rotary dial telephone. Checking with a retired repairman for the old Standard Telephone Co of Blairsville, revealed that this was the location of the booster relay station for the old landline that came out of Choestoe Station (Blairsville) and came up to Sunrise Grocery then “short cutted “ the route to Dahlonega by going up the mountain on Wolf Creek Road and out at Wolf Pen Gap and then to Dahlonega. They hated to get the repair call on snowy winter nites back in the 1960s when the telephone service to Suches and Dahlonega went out. This was state of the art telephone equipment pre 1970s. Far cry from the Smart phones and Fiber optics of today.
So here is the bonus adventure. See if you can find this relic-Standard Telephone Booster relay and Landline Telephone Pole. Some Hiking and Bushwhacking experience is necessary. Some sections are steep and there is elevation changes. During Hunting Season (Sept-Jan) wear Orange or Red. This is Wilderness Area so tread Lightly please.
Once you find the Wolf Pen Gap Cache proceed down this old Forest Service Road. In about 1/3 of a mile you will junction with another and better defined old Forest Service Road. Take the left fork. (The right fork goes back uphill and comes out at Sosebee Cove Scenic Wildflower Area and Trailhead.) Go down the Forest Service Road about 4/10s of a mile and you should see Standard Telephone Pedestal #236 on your left. Immediately behind it is an old style LandLine telephone pole. THE Cords for this is 34 45.987; 83 57.019 If you continue down this old FS road you will junction with Grassy Knob Road and thence out to FS 107 (West Wolf Creek Rd) and back to SR 180 (Wolf Pen Gap Rd)
The First to find and document by sending us an identifiable photo in front of the Standard TelephonenPlacard and 236 Steel Pedastal Cabinet will receive the highly sought after official GeoCaching “First to Find” Geocoin. We will arrange to get it to you. Sorry only one First to Find.
Now on the Backtrack you can return back uphill on the Breadcrumb back track trail …or bear to left at the junction and follow the “better” Forest Service road out to junction of Sosebee Cove Trail Head. If you go this way and Before you get to the trailhead see if you can spot the old wrecked rusting carcass of 1940s style car uphill of the Forest Service road and downhill from paved SR180.
When you come out at Trailhead at SR 180 Highway you will be 300 yds (+-) FROM Wolf Pen Gap. Either return route way you will have accomplished about a two mile roundtrip Hike in some of the North Georgia Mountains most Scenic Area and seen a bit of contemporary history. Happy Trails and Have Fun.
NOTE: Congrads toEek37.. FTF who reports they jumped right on the Cache and found Bonus Adventure=Standard Telephone#236 and are fowarding the photos which we will append when recieved..Way to Geocache!
