Geocache Description:

Easy drive along a dirt road off CA-18 leads to cache site.

FOR THE PEACE AND QUIET OF TONYA AND THE WOLVES, PLEASE DO NOT VISIT AT NIGHT - ONLY DURING THE DAY.

Find this cache and you will discover a sanctuary dedicated as a haven for wolves. But don't just sign the cache log without taking the time to visit and interact with these incredible animals. Many of these animals are domesticated and offer a unique opportunity for direct contact.

Wolf Mountain Sanctury (WMS) is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and proper management of wolves in the wild and in captivity.

WMS was founded in 1976 by Tonya Littlewolf, who is of Native American descent and has lived with the wolves since she was 2 years old. The wolves are her spirital brothers and she loves to share with people the healing spirit of the wolves.

These wolves are noble creatures and each has a story to tell. You will be able to touch a wolf, and look into there eyes. You can hear the surreal opera when the wolves join into a howl. Once you look into their eyes, your emotions will be stirred and you can see into your own soul.

If not for WMS and founder Tonya Littlewolf, many of these beautiful animals would have been put to death because of the illicit activities and inhumane treatment by breeders (wolves are not meant to be pets!) and naive owners. WMS runs solely on donations and receives no government help.

Tours are available Thursday through Sunday, 10am-5pm (last tour at 4pm). For a $25/person donation, you will receive a guided tour of the compound and a chance for an up-close encounter with a wolf. For $150/person, Tonya will provide a private tour and incite into her love for the wolves and their spiritual power.

WHAT IS THE POWER OF THE WOLVES? The Native American people called the wolf the PathFinder or Teacher. They admired the wolf's intelligence, courage and strength. They also saw in the wolf a loyal pack member who helped with the family as a whole when necessary. The tales handed down from generation to generation are mainly stories of wolf the keen hunter, wolf the devoted family member, wolf the proud defender of his territory, wolf the intelligent teacher, and wolf the true survivor. These were characteristics deserving great respect and emulation. To carry wolf power, among many tribes, was to be greatly honored and admired. In turn, the wolf was celebrated in ceremony and legend, as well as in dance and song.

DIRECTIONS TO WMS: Wolf Mountain Sanctuary is located 0.5 mile off CA-18 on Fairlane Road in Lucerne Valley. If you are driving from Big Bear, drive past the Mitsubishi Cement Plant and turn right onto Fairlane Road (which immediately follows mileage marker 68).
