The first building in what was to become San Jon was built in 1902, and railroad construction in 1904 caused the little settlement to boom. When a post office was established in 1906, the first postmaster, W.D. Bennett, named it San Jon, a name that has puzzled people ever since, as the Spanish-sounding name in fact makes no sense in Spanish. The consensus is that it's a corruption of the Spanish zanjon, "deep gully."
