Geocache Description:

Let me introduce you to one tuff old bird.

Major - General James Shields was an American politician and United States Army officer who was born in Altmore, County Tyrone, Ireland. Shields, a Democrat, is the only person in United States history to serve as a U.S. Senator for three different states. Shields was a senator from Illinois 1849 to 1855, in the 31st, 32nd, and 33rd congresses, from Minnesota from May 11, 1858 to March 4, 1859, in the 35th congress, and from Missouri from January 27, 1879 to March 4, 1879, in the 45th congress. I’ll take you to a statue of the general, located in the Carroll County Court House yard. Then we’ll go to his home in Carrollton. The next location will be his final resting place in St. Mary's Cemetery. Why do I call him a tuff old bird? Read this quote from the New York Times, dated June 3, 1879. “It was in this charge that the dashing commander received a wound which he and everyone else thought mortal. A grape-shot passed completely through his body, penetrating his lung and coming out near his spine. A Mexican surgeon preformed the remarkable operation-now historic in the annals of surgery-of drawing a silk handkerchief through the patient’s body, thus removing the clotted blood and saving Gen. Shields life. In 10 weeks the General was in the saddle again and participated in the battles of Contreras and Churubusco.” Now that’s one tuff old bird! Let us not forget the men and women who made the country great! Stage 1. N39 21.484 W 39 29.769 You will see the life size statue of Gen Shields. Record the year of his birth. (May 10 181A) Stage2.
