Mystery Monument
Situated along SH2 on the southern outskirts of Masterton is an old concrete monument with nothing more on it than what you’ll see to solve the puzzle and find the cache.
New Zealand celebrated a century of nationhood in 1940, with a wide variety of monuments and activities. You will find centennial halls and parks around the place – they usually date from 1940. Older people will remember a huge fun fair held at Rongotai in Wellington, to mark the occasion.
Masterton had a large parade which went through town to the Solway Showgrounds, but they also planted two centennial avenues – one on the northern boundary of the borough, and the other on the southern boundary. In both cases the trees have been lost, and, somewhat bizarrely, both markers placed at the same time, have also been shifted. The one you see was originally opposite the South Belt/High Street intersection, a few hundred meters north of its current site. It was shifted slightly in 1976, then in 1988 was removed to the Borough yard. It was placed where it currently is in 1990.
The one to the north now sits on land at the gateway to Hansells – it was originally about a hundred metres north at the intersection of Opaki Road and Fifth Street.
They are both natural concrete truncated iconic columns with pink and black granite plaques.
