The Name:
Depending on where you obtain your information from, the coordinates will have you near the parking area of either Frank "Thomson" or Frank "Thompson" Reserve - but despite what the National Parks Toilet Map claims, there are no (official) facilities to 'p' here.
The Location:
Frank Thomson Reserve, located at the highest point of the district between Kinglake Central and Kinglake on the Whittlesea-Kinglake Road, offers views to the Melbourne city skyline and is a fine vantage to view, on a clear day, Port Phillip Bay (although I don't ever recall seeing that on my visits). It is on Ganglehoff Road (Whittlesea-Kinglake Road) about 1.5km south-east of Kinglake Central, or about 2.5km north-west of the Kinglake Pub on the southern side of the road. The carpark offers access to a picnic area with gas barbecue and picnic tables.
The Puzzle:
Before you set off, take in the view of the city. Sure it is a good view, but is it the best? I think there is a better one on the way to the cache, but where you are standing is definitely easier to get to.
WP1 is almost visible from the puzzle coordinates
The Cache:
The cache is within walking distance of the initial coordinates (isn't everything given enough time?), WP2 is on private property (but don't worry, I've given myself permission to place the cache there) and GZ is in Kinglake National Park (accessed from the private property).
The container is an ammo can with initial contents of;
- Log Book
- Stash Note
- a pen & 2 pencils (thanks Ikea)
- A torch and my personal pathtag as FTF prize
- 5 more of my personal pathtag
- a bag of marbles
Notes
Note1: You will not have to negotiate any fences, if you find yourself confronted by a fence - you're doing it wrong! Likewise you will not have to cross any roads, if you do, you're doing it wrong!
Note2: You will be walking on uneven terrain, it is very steep in parts and most of the time you cannot see your footing - be prepared, you will slip and fall down at least once.
Note3: This cache is in bushland, proper foot wear, clothing and leg protection is advised - especially in summer.
Note4: You will be going significantly off trail, it is important that someone knows where you are going, or you have a companion with you for this cache (my Optus phone has coverage over the entire cache course).
Note5: As of 11/08/2012 the cache has been reworked and WP1 has been moved.
FTF honours goes to: Spladem and C@H on a joint insane night assault. Well done guys!
