Hoch über Meran auf einem mächtigen Schlosshügel thront Schloss
Tirol, die Stammburg der Grafen von Tirol. Nicht nur das
naheliegende Dorf Tirol sondern auch das ganze Land ist geprägt von
der Geschichte dieses Schlosses, gab es doch dem Land Tirol seinen
Namen.
Um 1140 von den Grafen von Tirol erbaut, wird Schloss Tirol alsbald
zum bedeutendsten Schloss in ganz Tirol. Seine Blütezeit erlebte es
unter Gräfin Margarethe Maultasch, endete jedoch als diese abdankte
und die Residence der Grafen von Meran nach Innsbruck verlegt wird.
Die Ringmauer des Schlosses, errichtet um 1100, gehört heute zu den
ältesten noch erhaltenen Burgmauern überhaupt.
Heute befindet sich hier das Südtiroler Landesmuseum für Kultur-
und Landesgeschichte, welches die Geschichte des Landes Tirols von
seinen Anfängen bis in die heutige Zeit schildert. Durch romanische
Marmorportale, vorbei an den Fresken der Doppelkapelle, durch das
Hochzeitszimmer der Margarethe Maultasch und in den Bergfried geht
es, wo auf 20 Ebenen die Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts
dargestellt wird.
Und nach einem Besuch im Schloss, kann man eindrucksvolle
Greifvögel bestaunen und einer Flugschau beiwohnen, denn in
unmittelbarer Nähe von Schloss Tirol gibt es eine
Greifvogelstation.
Der Cache befindet sich ganz in der Nähe des Schlosses und ist
gross genug um darin TB's und Geocoins abzulegen.

A 300 metri sopra Merano su un colle maestoso emerge il Castel
Tirolo, il castello avito dei conti di Tirolo. Un castello che non
solo diede il nome all’intera regione ma ne influenzò anche
la storia e il passato.
Costruito nell’anno 1140 dai conti di Tirolo, ben presto il
Castel Tirolo diventò il castello più importante di tutta la
regione. Durante gli anni successivi il castello era in possesso di
diversi conti e signorie, tra di loro la contessa Margarethe
Maultasch e l’imperatore austriaco Franz I. Le mura che
ancora oggi circondano il castello rientrano tra le più belle e ben
conservate in assoluto.
Nel 1919 il castello divenne proprietà della provincia, la quale ne
ha fatto uno splendido museo storico-culturale. Oltre
all’esposizione speciale sulle tre chiese sovrapposte nel
settore sud del fortilizio antemurale, la visita al museo include
anche il palazzo meridionale con i celebri portali romanici, gli
affreschi della cappella a due piani, la camera nuziale di
Margarethe Maultasch, il mastio, dove in 20 tappe si ripercorre la
storia del XX secolo.
E dopo aver visitato il castello si possono ammirare uccelli rapaci
e osservarli in volo, dato che nei pressi del castello si trova il
Centro Recupero Avifauna.
Il cache si trova vicino al castello ed é abbastanza grande per
depositare TB's e Geocoins.

On a majestic hill high above Merano towers Castel Tirolo, the
family seat of the Counts of Tyrol. It was this magnificent castle
that dominated not only the near-by hamlet of Tirolo but the entire
region of Tyrol. Did you know for instance that South Tyrol got its
name from this castle?
Built in 1140 by the Counts of Tyrol, it soon became the most
important castle in all of Tyrol. Its time of prosperity began with
the Austrian countess Margarethe Maultasch, ended however when the
seat of the counts was moved from Merano to the city of Innsbruck.
Today, the strong wall surrounding Castel Tirolo is among the
oldest still preserved ones all over.
Nowadays the castle hosts the South Tyrolean Museum of Cultural and
Provincial History, illustrating the history of Tyrol from its
beginnings to the present. A museum tour includes the southern
palace with its famous Romanesque portals, the frescoes in the
double chapel, the wedding chamber of Margarethe Maultasch and the
former dungeon, where the history of the 20th century is depicted
on twenty different levels.
Afterwards you might visit the fascinating birds of prey and watch
them flying as there is a bird care centre right near-by.
