Geocache Description:

Less than a mile round trip. Nice little jaunt along the Charles River located in a pleasant hemlock grove in Riverbend Conservation area.

Thanks to the efforts of Boy Scout Troop 29, there has been considerable new trail construction and trail clean up as well.

If you haven't already found my Where the Brookies are (Charles River, Franklin) cache, it is very close by. Where the Brookies are (Charles River, Franklin)

While you are hiking, you will come to the Sanford Mills complex: one of the few industrial structures remaining in Medway Village. This site on the Charles River was occupied by mills as early as 1711. The current complex consists of the main mill, built in 1881 in the Italianate style with rear ells constructed between 1910 and 1922; an adjacent office located at the entrance, was built between 1884 and 1887. The dam and falls that provided waterpower at this site are still visible. The mill was originally used for the manufacturing of textiles. The complex housed manufacturing operations until the 1980s, when it was converted to condominiums.

After the initial trail in, some bushwhacking maybe required, but most areas are fairly wide open so it isn't that bad to get around. Some spots are on an a steep incline. Maybe slippery when icy or wet. Coordinates for stages are either at or below eye level. They should be easier to read now that we replaced them with etched tags. Patience is required, as GPS reception can be horrendous here as we evidenced this afternoon. We thought numbers for final were way off, but after a few rechecks it was just the GPS bouncing us around.

If you go more than halfway down the slope to the water looking for the final, you've gone too far !
