A multi-cache on the outskirts of the village of Berriew alongside the canal. Can be reached from a number of directions on foot. Car parking is available nearby. Relatively easy terrain and access.
The coordinates above will take you to a point area where you will find the information that will lead you to the cache which is hidden nearby. The final cache location was moved in May 2024 due to council works.
Exercise caution with small children as this cache is near the river and the canal.
You may need a tweezers to remove the log from the cache, and you will need to bring a pen or pencil to sign the log.
Berriew Aqueduct is a grade 2 listed structure which carries the Montgomery Canal over the River Rhiw, a tributary of the Severn, in the village of Berriew.
This four span aqueduct was built in 1796. There were problems during construction of the original design by John Dadford and his brother Thomas Dadford, Junior. William Jessop was brought in to advise the company and their father Thomas Dadford, Senior was later appointed as the engineer to complete the works.
To find the cache you will need to find out in which year the aqueduct was rebuilt (18AB), and how many miles along the canal the aqueduct is away from Welshpool (C).
The final coordinates for the cache are
N52’ 35.(A)(C-1)(B-1)
W003’ 12.(C-5)(B-A)(B)
After finding the cache, take the opportunity to explore the pretty village of Berriew and talk a walk along the canal towpath. The following link downloads a British Waterways Explorer Map for the Montgomeryshire Canal and a suggested circular walk from the car park at the start of this multi cache.
