The village of Dargo lies at the foot of the Dargo High Plains nestled in a beautiful valley of 100 year old walnut trees.
There are quite a few caches around Dargo for the more adventurous but nothing in Dargo Township itself. This simple cache is for those that are adventurous enough to visit this remote village. No Sherpa’s or highly modified 4WD or climbing equipment or camping gear for extended safaris is needed, just a quick 'drive by' on the way to the public toilets.
Petrol is available at the general store; there is an historical museum open at weekends or by appointment. There are public toilets, lots of accommodation and a caravan park. Not forgetting the Dargo Hotel around which, the town gathers.
The Dargo River meanders its way through the town, making Dargo an ideal destination for a day trip or a starting point to discover the spectacular scenery of the High Plains and the Grant Historical Area.
The town first came to prominence in the 1860's during the gold rush to the Crooked River. It was a supply centre for the miners camped out on the rivers. Bullock teams hauled Irish whiskey, picks, shovels and food into the town. Packhorse teams then carried goods to towns such as Grant, Talbotville and Bull Town. These towns were carved from the wilderness and linked by bridle tracks.
Today Dargo attracts fishermen, walkers, hikers, 4WD and trail bike riders and those intent on getting out and enjoying the bush.
All that remains of the mining heritage are the mines, crumbling dwellings and old machinery. As one wanders through the old cemeteries one can feel the loneliness and expectations experienced by those pioneers.
Dargo is still a place to stop over, only now visitors come to stay, relax and enjoy this picturesque and peaceful valley.
The cache is a 400ml Sistema containing a note book, cache note, a pencil and assorted 'treasure' The GPS receiver had great difficulty producing a consistant result. A hint has been added to help location of the cache if needed.
