A cache made of recycled materials near an old Victorian rubbish dump beside the Leeds to Liverpool Canal.
Previously this old rubbish dump has been excavated and is beside a local stream known as The Runnels which runs under the canal. Runnel is the old Norse name for a stream.
A LOAD OF RUBBISH!
A very important role played by the canal was transporting domestic refuse and human waste collected from toilets (known as 'night soil') away from Liverpool. In an age before flushing toilets this was an important public health measure.
MANURE
In the 19th century the 'night soil men' had one of the worst jobs on the canal. They collected Liverpool's refuse, which included horse manure and 'night soil' (human waste). This was removed by horse drawn cart and dumped on canal side manure wharves where it was sorted and loaded into specially adapted boats. By the 1860s more than 4,000 tons of refuse and 3,000 tons of night soil were carried along the canal weekly; by 1890 this had increaded to 172,801 tons of manure and night soil were carried on the canal.
REFUSE
Liverpool's rapid population expansion resulted in the need for new ways of dealing with all the rubbish produced. New ways of dealing with Liverpool's rubbish problem were continually sought. Refuse, including manure, was taken by boat and dumped on West Lancashire farmland, where it was a welcome resource. As the amounts of rubbish in the manure increased, farmers demanded payment for dumping.
Feedback welcome so I can change the details if needed.
