The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin Orton Waterville was founded before the early 12th century by the Waterville family as a private chapel.
It was rebuilt at the end of the 13th century. The North and South aisles were remodelled and 1330-1340 and the South porch added.
The tower was rebuilt in around 1500 and the belfry added. The tower has been recently refurbished and the bells restored and rehung. Please see the bells page. There are four gargoyles on the top of the tower. These can be seen from outside and are part of the water drainage system.
The Piscina
To the right of the Mary altar is a sink built into the wall to get rid of the water used during the service. The water drains through the wall to the outside. Another piscina can be found to the right of the Jesus altar.
The Font
The font dates back from about 1300 - it must have seen a lot of baptisms!
The pulpit
The pulpit is made of oak and has very ornate carvings on it. It dates back to 1618 and was given by the church of Gt St. Mary's Cambridge, being transported by ox wagon in 1748.
The cache is a small tube, can be done as a cache and dash.
“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list”
