Geocache Description:

A short walk from the DOC Visitors Centre to see a demonstration kauri-driving dam as used throughout the Kauaeranga Valley.

The cache is by a one-third size replica of the wooden dams constructed in the 1920's for driving kauri logs down the creeks to the Kauaeranga River. Further up the valley, there are a number of walks to the remains of a few of the 60 dams that were built during the kauri logging years from the 1870s to the 1920s.

Nearby, there is also the remains of a water race that used to supply water for the Thames township (visit link)

The cache is a 35mm film cannister with a small pencil and 3 small tradeable items.

The GPS was not very accurate under the trees, but if you sit to take a close look at the dam (while you wait for muggles to pass by ;-), you'll be right on top of it.
