Epler’s Rock Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

geojo1: I love this area near the Schuylkill River. So many trails. Last summer rains partially washed out the access road to the Epler's Boat Landing Parking area. With no safe place to park it was time to archive these caches. Thanks to all who ventured out to find this one.

Geocache Description:

A little history of Epler’s Rock

The Epler family purchased about 500 acres in Bern Township in 1740. They eventually purchased an additional 800 acres in Bern and a piece of land at 6th and Penn Sts. It is fitting that this forgotten spot should carry the Epler name. The Felix Dam across the Schuylkill River created a pool for the Schuylkill Navigation Company (in operation from about 1815 through 1873 when the railroad bought the waterway) that carried coal from Schuylkill County down to Philadelphia by way of locks (Kelly’s, Peacock Locks and the Duncan Canal) several that are still preserved on the Muhlenberg side of the river.

In 1947 the US Government made use of the many dams to finally clean up the lifeless Schuylkill River by crating basins to settle out the black coal ruining the river. This area still has large amounts of coal silt reclaimed from the river.

In the days before the Felix Dam was breached and eventually removed, the pool behind the dam created a recreation area for local water skiing enthusiasts. Epler’s Landing aka Epler’s Access became the public summer hot spot for launching your boat, canoe or kayak. There are remains of the parking and picnic area nearby, take a walk to see the beautiful sights along the Schuylkill River and the extensive trail system that has been created by off road dirt bikes.

Happy Caching!
