Cane Creek Church

Permission for this cache has been graciously granted by the church leadership, so please treat the property respectfully and do not hunt for this cache on Sundays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. or on Wednesdays from 5 p. m. to 7:30 p. m. or at any other time that church activities are taking place.

Between 1795 and 1810, the number of settlers in the Fairview area increased from just an occasional cabin here and there to an actual settlement with all surrounding land being owned by someone. By 1805, there was a school on Cane Creek. The next year, the schoolmaster and local Christians chartered the first church in Fairview, Cane Creek Baptist Church. The schoolmaster, Elder Humphrey Posey, became the pastor and preached throughout the area until 1817, when he accepted a call to bring the Gospel to the Cherokee Indians in far western North Carolina.

Cane Creek Baptist Church provided for not only the spiritual and social needs of the people, but the minor legal needs as well. Rev. Posey preached one Saturday and one Sunday of each month. Church business was also taken care of on Saturdays because more people were able to come to town on that day. Sometimes that business included a “trial” if a citizen had misbehaved. The church building served as a “courthouse” and the congregation as a “jury” for trying offenses against the local moral standards and lesser offenses against the civil law.

Members could be charged with anything from “skirts up above the ankle” to drunkenness, fighting, stealing, or practicing sorcery. Penalties ranged from paying a small fine to being ejected from church membership and rejected by the community, according to the seriousness of the crime. This form of public accountability seemed to work well, and Fairview gained a reputation as an upright community.

The original church building stood across the road from the present Cane Creek Cemetery (N 35º 31.313 W 082º 24.036). In 1891 the congregation relocated to a spot within a few feet of this cache location. By 1913 the third and current sanctuary had been erected, and the church was renamed Fairview Baptist Church.

If you are working toward the kids' Fairview prizes, be sure to write down what you think the current church building (with steeple) is made of.
