Geocache Description:

This is the location of Bumbunga Head Station. This was one of two head stations of pastoral lease 124 which was taken up by Mr John Ellis in 1838 until the Hundred of Cameron was surveyed in 1868.This lease ran the entire length of the Barunga range (both sides),from just south of present Lochiel to just west of Redhill.
At this site once stood two huts , an L-shaped woolshed and a kitchen and a sheperds hut (15mtx3mt), a men's bedroom (12mtx4mt),yards and a well on the south. There were two huts north of this in the foothills.
As you face the lake there are two land yachts that have been used many a time by a number of young men (not least myself).Believe me, it can get very fast out on Lake Bumbunga and one can get very bad abbrasions if you come a cropper.
The current homestead has at its centre a corridor thats was part of the original men's bedroom ad as it should be these walls are the only parts of the house that have never had to be repaired, they sure knew how to make them in the old days.
Once the run was surveyed most of it became part of Barunga Station, owned by the Barr Smith family.
The Hundred of Cameron was named after Mr Hugh Cameron who came to South Australia in 1838 and managed Lease 124,owned by Mr John Ellis.Mr Cameron went on to become a pioneer in the pastoral industry and then retired to Adelaide in 1883, just a year before his death.
