Geocache Description:

This cache should not be found or logged until after 6:00am on November 5th as it has been placed for the KACHE 4 event.

An ominous tall fence surrounds this location. Add in several intimidating signs and a person may wonder why is a geocache hidden in this area?

Guess it is time to stop and take a second look. The signs are NOT saying stay out.. instead they are a warning: "Entering these premises will expose you to risk of harm & serious injury. Owner takes no responsibility for any injury that occurs on these premises." When you walk to the bottom of River Street you will find the legal entrance to the premises. A series of well-travelled trails can be found once you pass through this gate.

If you decide to enter through the gates you will discover the true force of Mother Nature and her will to correct the injuries once placed upon her.

This location once housed the Davis Tannery (hence the warnings). It leaked poisons into the soil for decades and rumors have it that waste was continued to be dumped here even after the old tannery was torn down.

However, Mother nature is winning! As you first enter you will be greeted by a dense thicket of young Silver Maple, White Oak and Red Ash trees. As you follow the trails you will discover a thriving marsh where once gravel had blocked out all the water to straighten the shoreline. Even the hills (mounds of soil from other dump grounds) have started to rebound with creeping stems, mullein and thistles embedding their roots to begin the process of stabilizing the soil for future life.

As I walked through this site, I was amazed at the amount of vegetation and wildlife that existed behind those imposing fences. It is incredible to see the signs of regeneration occurring in an area once thought beyond repair. Maybe you will spot a Heron relaxing by the water or a deer bounding across your trail as you hunt for the cache part of the proof that Mother Nature is winning in her attempt to repair our damage.
