Geocache Description:

This is a replacement cache for the archived “Tree Minute Rest for a Highwayman.” Cache is a cammo’d peanut butter jar with lots of room for goodies.

I’m placing this in honor of my maternal grandfather, Dean Crane. Born in 1917, Dean had to drop out of high school to run the family farm when his father passed away. He trained to become a pilot, and served as a flight instructor during WWII. He had lots of great stories from those days, including going AWOL once by hiding in a trunk of a car because he wanted to go to a friend’s wedding. He and my grandmother, Bertha, were married in 1944 on the base. After the war, they raised five children on a farm outside Lansing, Michigan, that had been in her family since 1870 - right across from the city airport. Dean farmed hay and straw and flew planes for businessmen and the Michigan governor. He and Bertha had been married for 64 years when she died in 2004, and Dean passed away a year later at the age of 89.

He was a gentle man, had a great sense of humor, scribbled funny cartoons on letters to his grandkids, loved science, and loved to fly. He would have loved to hang out by this tiny airport, watching the little planes come and go.
