This cache is a testament to bureaucracy and the ability for Local and Central Government to spend as much of your tax dollars as possible over the longest period of time.

When this roading extension was first completed (1997) many in the area, while grateful for the new bridge over the Waikato River for the northern suburbs. However many locals to Hamilton wondered at the time why it was never made into a four lane road with a four lane bridge as it appeared obvious that the future growth in both the residential and commercial/industrial was going to be to the north of the city. This growth has proven to be so.

The original layout of the road between Pukete Road and Resolution Drive was costed at a total of $18 million for stage 1 & 2. At peak traffic times this piece of roading has been diabolical for congestion for at least the past 10 years. Even in more recent times congestion on this piece of road at the weekends has had its own issues especially since the growth of “The Base”.

The cost of the works for the Four-Laning of Wairere Drive is estimated at a further 28.6 Million dollars. When completed the work will be appreciated by commuters in the Northern suburbs of Hamilton.

Room only for the Log.
