Geocache Description:

Monuments to Invention and Engineering - MIE

This micro cache is located outside the fence by some great monuments to invention and engineering. It is attached by a thin string to something. Advancements in transportation helped to build and change this country. When the transcontinental railroad was built and the last spike was driven in 1869, a lot changed in terms of the movement of goods and travel for people.

When you come for this cache you can open your eyes and see many railroad locomotives, displays of cars, fire trucks, buses, trolleys, planes, and a boat.

Parking is free and one can view a portion of the collection from the parking lot. There typically is one summer weekend when admission is free. Most of the time there are fees to walk on and inside the trains.

Have fun finding this cache in this St Louis County Park. You do not need to pay for admission to get this cache, and the cache can be legally found even if the front gates are closed because the cache is not inside the fences.

Additional:

Yesterday was Geocaching 101 #18 by the St. Louis Area Geocachers Association. Regretfully, I have never been to one of these so I can only wonder if they teach about First to Finds (FTFs) and what it takes to get a FTF. Feel free to post your FTF advice to new cachers here.

Offering an alternative opinion, some might think it is best to be Second to Find (STF) since no cache is easier to find than when it is being held by another geocacher! Have Fun!

Congratulations and FTF honors to C3GPS

I noticed some of the FTF pros are posting some tips on how to get or earn a FTF. One thing I haven't seen posted is to have a premium geocaching.com account, and get email notifications on your smart phone when a new cache is posted. I'm not exactly sure how this works, but if you're lucky one day you'll be just two blocks away from a newly posted cache when you get an email. Then you can grab your FTF and meet fellow geocachers who arrive there later.

Warning

NOTICE: Please be respectful of the posted park hours. If you enter the park after hours you are trespassing. If you are stopped you can be ticketed or arrested and will put the future of geocaching in the parks in jeopardySpecial permission to hide caches in St. Louis County parks is NOT needed as long as the Groundspeak rules are followed. "Blanket Permission" has been worked out in advance with the park service. DO NOT CALL THE PARK as they cannot handle the calls. The Groundspeak cache reviewer does need to know exactly how and where the caches are hidden and what type of containers are used. The geocaching liaisons will notify the park service of new caches. Remember NO AMMO BOXES or PVC PIPE caches.
