Geocache Description:

Remember GPS reception downtown is awful, please look at the maps and hint before heading out. My GPS pointed to a spot two blocks south!

The Calgary Stampede, together with the Province of Alberta and City of Calgary, are pleased to present Calgary's newest piece of public art July 12 – eight grand horses created by internationally acclaimed Canadian artist Joe Fafard. The sculpture will permanently reside in the downtown Province of Alberta courthouse park (official name to be announced at a later date).

The sculpture, the second in the series of two entitled "Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si Do" is comprised of eight powder-coated 5/8 inch cut-steel plate horses. The art initiative was created to commemorate Québec City's 400th anniversary and the Calgary – Québec City sister-city relationship.

"These horses will serve as a long lasting symbol of our nation's shared past, and of the strong friendship between our two sister-cities," said the Honourable Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta.

The horses are in different poses to represent movement: past, present and the future. Dozens of smaller images reside within each horse, from the nation's flag, to the provinces that make up our nation, to significant buildings and various animals.

"This new addition to our city captures the essence of the spirit of the Calgary Stampede. It is an excellent reminder of our western heritage that will be with us for years to come," said His Worship Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of the City of Calgary.

"There is a special place for the role that the horse has played in shaping our history," said Joe Fafard. "For me, the gifting from Calgary to Québec City represents for me an acknowledgement of the gift to mankind that the horse surely is." (from the Marketwire July 12, 2011 press release)
