Zigzag is perhaps one of the lesser known tracks in the network of bush tracks which surround Wainuiomata. Although the above link suggests fairly difficult terrain at the top, most of it is in fact an easy climb with only one short steep section.
The terrain rating reflects the existence of this steep section so it would not be wise to take this track to the cache unless you are able to cope with terrain 3.
Good hiking shoes or boots are essential to ensure a safe footing and particularly the steeper part of the track may be slippery when wet. The trailhead is only a few hundred metres from the Wainuiomata Mall and Queen Street shops so you can readily get your refreshments before the trip, to take with you on it and/or when you finish! The track joins up with the Ridge Track which connects with the Mount Lowry Track so if you are fit enough you can do the other caches on the ridge line: Mt Lowry Challenge, Puriri Track, Broad Gully and Beech View. Owing to the amount of gorse at the top of the track, the cache is not on Zigzag itself but is not far from the track junction. Mountain bikes are permitted on Zigzag and Rata Ridge track.
The cache is a 2 litre camo Sistema and is close to the edge of the track so no need to bush bash, please respect our beautiful vegetation. Please hide the cache well when you return it using the available cover.
