Geocache Description:

Iowa State Penitentiary Inmate Graveyard.

The Iowa State Penitentiary was established in 1839. During this time, the institution was a territorial prison until Iowa became a state in 1846. If an inmate was given the death penalty they would be hanged in the gallows of the prison. In earlier days, the public was allowed to view the executions through an opening from outside the prison wall. It is said that the inmates were buried in the prison's inmate graveyard with the rope they were hanged. The last hanging was conducted on March 15, 1963. Later that year, the death penalty was abolished in the state of Iowa.

This Geocache has been replaced with new items for everyone to enjoy.
