Geocache Description:

Bottom of Michener Hill. Short walk and minor bushwacking.

For the past few years our family has enjoyed the hill to the North of this cache in the winter time for tobogganing as we live close by. There was a time when the city of Red Deer operated ski hill just South of this location.

If you walk up the center clearing about 100-125 meters south of the cache, you'll find some concrete footings which are the remnants of the old t-bar lift. Until the mid-1970s, you could ski at Woodlea for 50 cents a day. The hill had a portable unit to warm up in with snacks and hot chocolate available. These amenities made the adjoining toboggan hill and skating rink quite popular during winter weekends.

The public schools also made use of the facilities by including skiing in their phys-ed curriculum.

The operators of nearby Canyon Ski hill began to complain, citing that the tax-subsidized Woodlea ski area had an unfair advantage for school ski lessons. Eventually, the facilities aged and became somewhat run down. It was closed for skiing and the t-bar lift was removed. That is except for the concrete footings.

This is a short walk from nearby parking with minor bushwacking closer to the cache.

Original contents include a headlamp, compass, first aid kit, smiley balls, and a few trinkets.

Congratulations to Jimijigilo for the FTF on this hide.
