Geocache Description:

A regular-sized lock-n-lock.

The community of St. Gabriel was settled in 1767 by Acadian exiles sent by the Spanish Governor Dan Ontonio DeUlloa to settle in the coast of Iberville, known as Manchac.

St. Gabriel Catholic Church is the oldest church in the Louisiana Purchase territory. Originally called Church of the Iberville Coast, it was built by the Acadians in 1769. The current Victorian renovation was completed in 1870. The building was moved four times as new levees were constructed, most recently in 1928. The timbers were found to be in perfect condition and in the tower is the original bell of the parish, which is still used. It bears the inscription, “Sancta Maria de la Merced, Ora Pro Nobis-Se Hizo-Commendodos-MRPI Ygnacio de Jesus Maria-Ano de 1768.”

The church lost some of its cemetery to the river during these moves. Behind the church you will find unclaimed tombstones from the old cemetery.

Congrats to GI JOE for FTF!
