A short walk to an open viewpoint.
The chimneys are the remains of the lead smelting industry in
Allendale. The flues from the Allendale smelt mill can be traced
for 3.5 miles as they climb 820 ft from the river East Allen to the
high moors. With care, the flue can be studied in detail but be
careful as the stonework is often loose and some areas have caved
in. These long flues were built in the 1780's to enable fumes to be
carried far from the dales to be expelled on the high moors.
