Remembering Richard (Dick) M. Westlund Dick was born in Ashland, Wisconsin on August 8, 1939 and passed away on October 25, 2011 from long term cancer complications. We graduated from the Ashland High School in 1957 and he attended Ashland County Teachers College. We both attended the University of Wisconsin, Superior, previously called Wisconsin State University in Superior, and graduated with Bachelor’s degrees in 1961. He devoted most of his work-life teaching art to children of all ages in Ashland and other community schools. Dick was very active his entire life in church functions. He was well known and, most importantly, well liked throughout the community which was made most obvious by the vast numbers of people that came to say “good by” to him at his funeral services on October 29, 2011. He enjoyed boating, camping, and riding his bicycle along the roads and trails in the area. The reason for selecting Prentice Park for this geocache is that in the 1950s, Dick and I rode our bicycles on all the trails through this park and camped in my tent, and drank gallons of the artesian water constantly running year round out of pipes in this park. Later when we were old enough to get our driver’s licenses, we kept the park roads open in the winter by driving through them after heavy snowfall events. And when I was a life guard at Sand Bar beach (Masalowski Beach now), across Highway 2 from Prentice Park, Dick and I spent many hours swimming after my normal duty hours. Dick will be missed dearly and this geocache will help remember him. Anyone finding this cache, who knew Dick, is welcome to add any additional stories or information about him in the comment section when you log your find. Ashland is my hometown and even though I do not reside there now, I visit this town often and have numerous friends and relatives located there that will assist in the maintenance of this geocache if necessary
