Geocache Description:

Hello there we are the new owners of the Kelar Grist Mill. We have hijacked the geocache. We love going geocachingand we've always wanted to have a spot here but there is already one here so we have decided to make it a little better within a 100 feet we have placed a bigger hidden geocache for you to find. Watch out for the snakes and other hidden creatures. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Previous owner: My old paddling buddy, Shady (Now deceased)brought us here on a canoe/kayak trip from Westport to Burgmeir's about 6 years ago and this place was a BLAST! Cabin Boy wanted to run the "chute" over and over again. Each time through must have scraped at least $5.00 worth of plastic off of the canoe but it was worth every penny. I didn't know it at the time, but this place is the historic site of the Kellar Grist Mill. The sign speaks of flat boats leaving from here going as far as New Orleans. That had to be some trip and I wonder if they came back after they ran out of money. I've heard that there was a skeleton of a man that was over 8 ft tall found near Brewersville in the 1800s and I'm attempting to find more details. Jennings County could have used just such a person on their basketball team had he been born a few hundred years later. From the sign, near the cache: Kellar Grist Mill Adam Kellar began constructing a stone mill race on Sand Creek in 1813 and opened the grist mill in 1823. (The) Mill was important to local economy and was an impetus for development: state road to mill established 1834 and Brewersville founded 1837. Flatboats carried mill products as far as New Orleans. (The) Mill was closed after damage in 1937 flood. The difficulty level is a little higher because parking isn't the greatest here. I would recommend hunting this one in the daytime because the surrounding terrain is very unforgiving. You could say the "rapids" are nearby but not at GZ. OVO
