Geocache Description:

***Original Cache was washed away winter 2012***

New container is a 500ml plastic jar, camoed. Thanks to Marmis for the temporary mint tin cache. It is still in the area, but finds of that container will not count. If you find it, please remove it.

While collecting caches in Puhinui Reserve, I eyed up what I think is a pretty neat spot. Plenty of wildlife within the reserve. On the day I placed the cache, I spied Pukeko, Rabbits, two Skinks and an Eel.

Follow the track that goes straight ahead when the gravel road bends around to the right after the toilets. It's a nice walk and it'll take you most of the way to the cache. Jump the fence and use the natural "bridge" to access the lower level. There are other, less awesome methods of getting to the cache if you explore enough. Best to avoid this one during bad weather, as GZ appears prone to flooding from rising stream levels, judging by the amount of debris on the banks. The previous cache, a cool wooden box, was washed away in flooding.

The predominant use of the reserve is for informal passive recreation and is a popular destination for organised tramping and walking groups.
The reserve open areas are stocked over the course of the year with varying numbers of sheep (mainly over winter) and cattle. Auckland Equestrian Events use the reserve on an annual basis to host the ‘Puhinui Three Day Event’ held in March.

Some other uses for the reserve include: Jogging, orienteering, cycling, photography, sketching, outdoor education/conservation, picnics, spectator activities, interpretation, bird study AND GEOCACHING!

Fine Print:

Access is from the end of Prices Rd. Designated car parking is provided next to the old red barn. Vehicle access beyond the car park is prohibited, so you'll have to walk or ride the rest of the way.

Dogs are not permitted in the reserve except during the annual three-day Equestrian Event held in March when dogs must be on a leash.

Gates are locked at night, so make note of the times on the gate to avoid being locked in if visiting around dusk.
