The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Thoroughbred horse races that usually takes place the first weekend of November each year. The event was created as a year-end championship for North American Thoroughbred racing and is widely-considered the "Super Bowl" of horse racing as the races typically have the largest purses and draw the best Thoroughbreds from across the world. In 2011, the 28th Breeders' Cup World Championship is being held in Louisville, KY, at the home of the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs.
This cache series is a tribute to each horse running in the Breeders' Cup Classic, the richest and best race on the card, as well as horse racing handicapping tips that you might, at some point in time, find useful.
Drosselmeyer is a four year old Kentucky bred owned by Winstar Farms, trained by William "Billy" Mott, and ridden by jockey Mike Smith. Drosselmeyer has 15 career starts, including a win in the 2010 Belmont Stakes, the third jewel in the prestigious Triple Crown. Over his career, he has won $1,028,170 and four races. He is listed on the morning line as having 15-1 odds to win the race, but he could easily outrun his odds based upon his lifetime class.
This brings us to our horse handicapping lesson for this cache. What is the lifetime class, you ask? Class, in horse racing handicapping, refers to the type of races that a horse typically runs. The lowest level of horse races is called claiming, where a horse can actually be bought or "claimed" if it enters a race. The next level of races is called allowance, where the horses run for a set prize or "allowance" and they can not be bought as a condition of entry. The highest level of races is known as Stakes racing, where the best horses run for the highest "stakes." The Breeders' Cup Classic is considered a Grade I Stakes race, which is the highest classification of the three stakes available. If a horse runs in GI, G2, or G3 stakes races, you can bet that the quality of the horse is very high. You can find the type of races a horse runs in its running lines on the Daily Racing Form's Past Performances under the "Race Type" heading.
