Camo'd spice bottle. Be aware of desert critters and use extra caution during inclement weather. Terrain rating is based on accessibility. No LP nor GR here. This remote area is only about 8 miles ATCF southeast of Lamy, but use Santa Fe County Road 51 from the Canoncito Exit off of I-25.
The Ojo de la Vaca Cemetery, often called Cow Springs, dates back into the 1800s. It is located just outside of the extreme northeast corner of the huge Canon Blanco Ranch and along the western side of the Las Vegas de las Vacas Valley, the 'meadows of the cows'. This valley is a topographical high, situated between the Pecos watershed and Galisteo River Basin.
Ojo de la Vaca, named after the spring here, is a prominent reference point on old land maps. The old town site is just north of the cemetery with a few remaining buildings and foundations to remind us that this was a large trading point in the early 1900s. The Cow Sprins Post Office was open from 1899 to 1906.
The Yam-p'ham-ba Indians, a southern Tewa tribe from the San Cristobal Pueblo southwest of here, shared this big-game hunting ground area from the 1200s into the 1600s with other nearby pueblos, including the Pecos Pueblo tribe from the north.
This "Spirit" cache is placed in hopes of paying respect to the pioneer Ojo de la Vaca ancestors having 'gone' on before us, and, possibly picking up a bit of history of this area.
We solicit your support as a volunteer cacher to place a "Spirit" cache at a cemetery of your choosing.
