Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

Geocaches which have not been maintained or the owner has not responded will not be taken out of the archive

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,

Geocache Description:

Working on a more "fancy" cache, but a regular "grab-a-box" will have to do for now.

Quick and standard cache at Hennset ferry quay, in Halsa Municipality. This ferry route doesn't experience a lot of traffic, but numbers have risen since the new E39 was opened in 2010.

ENGLISH:

This quay was national news one evening of autumn 2011 when the ferry missed the quay by several hundred metres. More on NRK.no .

This ferry crossing connects the two municipalities "Aure" (on the other side) and "Halsa" (here). The fjord(s) used to be the main road along the coast. Therefore, a lot of Norwegian coastal villages are best viewed from the sea - then you will see the original "front" of the village. Parts of Halsa (Rodal and Engdal) used to belong to Aure municipality, because it was actually easier to reach Aure by boat, than walking over mountains. Back then (before the 1950s) there was no road going through what today is Halsa.

The "Hennset-Arasvika" ferry route is not the busiest and not the most important in Halsa (as the Halsa-Kanestraum connects E39), but this ferry crossing is the more charming of them.

If you are travelling with this ferry, be sure to take time to look at the beautiful Vinje fjord from the ferry's upper deck.

Halsa

Halsa has it's pluses and minuses. Great nature. Beautiful scenery. Excellent hiking possibilities. Easy access to the main road along the Western coast (E39). Still, population is declining. Urbanization has hit Halsa harder than many other municipalities, even though people leaving for the cities is a problem in many rural areas in Norway.

Different areas of Halsa have very different identities. Valsøyfjord is an old industrial area and used to be the largest industrial centre in Møre & Romsdal county. Here, people from all over the world used to come to find work. The labour movement was very strong. Traditional boat building still stands strong here.
The other side of the Municipality (Halsa and Halsanaustan) was more proned to farming the land, land ownership and running timber industries. The labour movement was, therefore, not very strong here. One can still sense "remains" of that difference today.

Halsa is not spectacular at first glance (besides the scenery), but it is a very "honest" piece of rural Norway. And, as with most things, once you get to know the place, it actually is quite spectacular and has a very interesting history.

I therefore found making a kind of Halsa themed series was a fun cache project. There are/will be caches with short snippets of local history all over the municipality. At least one for each "grend" (village) and noticable site. If you are new to Norway, this example of a typical Norwegian municipality, everyday rural life and varied scenery, could make for an interesting experience and sightseeing.

Halsa has 1595 inhabitants and 300 sq. km. land mass, whereof 8 sq. km. is water. Halsa is also known for being the place where the world famous Killer whale "Keiko" swam to and stayed until he died some years ago.

The "Halsa" chapter in every cache decription will be identical.
