Geocache Description:

CascAda History #4 - Village of Cascade
The Cascade & Ada Township History Series

Cascade, founded in 1836, had many rolling hills, valleys, lakes, springs, creeks, and the most obvious natural feature – the Thornapple River - which fell 20 feet in short cascades during its six mile journey from south to north.

A portion of the building closest to this cache, was built in 1855 as a handyman’s shop until 1930 when it became a residence for many years before returning to a commercial building in the 1970’s. You can find a display of the original insulation in the form of newspaper lined lath boards just inside the back door of this establishment today.

Two notable buildings that still stand:
At the southwest corner of Cascade and Thornapple River Drive, a grocery was established in 1849. It has changed hands throughout the years, but is open to the public today. Near the northwest corner of Cascade and Thornapple River Drive stands a white nineteenth century frame building which was built as the Township Hall in 1898. It became the library for a time, and later became the Township Museum.

Other notable buildings that no longer stand:
The Ferry House, later the Cascade Hotel, was built in 1845 at the corner of Cascade and Thornapple River Drive. It was at this time, that the first ferry boat commenced its trips across the river just south of the current bridge, which was not yet built.

The first dam was built in 1853, about in the same location as the one you see today. While it was much smaller, so were the backwaters.

A saw mill was also likely on the south banks of the river as logs were reportedly hauled out to be cut into lumber here. A flour mill was also nearby.

The owner of the nearby establishment gave permission to place this geocache (on their property, not far from the bandstand/deck/christmas lights area)
