Geocache Description:

Easy/Moderate hike up the coal bank, about 500' from the parking area. Giving some history and insight to a significant part of Pennsylvania's coal mining region.

This Earthcache will give cachers some little known facts and knowledge about this prominent landscape feature. The Jeanesville Bank is the highest single coal refuse bank in the entire Anthracite Region and can be seen to the southwest from Freeland, the south east from Hazle Township, and the north from McAdoo and Trescow. It rose about 200-300 feet higher than the highest elevation of the Spring Mountain plateau until the 1950's when the top 1/3 of the bank was removed. This bank was formed when the Spring Mountain Coal Company breakers #2 and #4, Owned by the Spring Mountain Colliery, consolidated coal mine refuse from the three coal veins beneath the ground and used a dragline to form this mountain, starting around 1860. This continued until the 1940's when the Spring Mountain Colliery closed down. During the late 1800's to the mid 1900's the Spring Mountain Colliery usually shipped 1200 tons of coal to market every day. In order to claim this EarthCache, I will need a few questions answered. The questions must be answered and messaged to me. A photo is optional based on EarthCache Guidelines. 1. Because this is the tallest coal bank in the Anthracite Region, message me the elevation reading on your GPS from the top of the bank. 2. At the Jeanesville Bank, you will find a small amount of Anthracite Coal mixed with the rest of the refuse material left behind by the coal breakers and the coal picker boys. Find and Identify at least three (3) types of rock you find on the bank and give me a percentage of the amount of each rock to what you believe to be the bank's total composition.
