How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

Cache is at the posted coordinates - appropriately enough cache is right at the San Francisco Zoo (not inside). But you must qualify prior to logging a find.

This challenge cache is built upon two elements: animals and the number five.

To find this cache, you must find 50 caches that contain the name of an animal in the cache name. You can't repeat the animal name. To make it more fun, five of these caches must come from cache owners that also have animals in their geocaching name. Finally, you must have found your 50 caches in at least five counties, states, providences, and/or countries.

A few rules:

You can't duplicate animal names in the cache titles, but you can use variations on animal gender and age (i.e. Ram, Lamb, Ewe and Sheep would all work to score you four caches).

No dinosaurs, mythology, or fictional animals.

No fake animals (i.e. "The Diamond Beaked Pink Dragon Cache" would not work)

No animal proper names (i.e. no Snoopy, Garfield, Kitty, Fido, Tweety)

In selecting the cache names the animal name must stand alone (i.e. "Batter Up!" would not work for "Bat", but "Swing that Bat" would work) - but for cache owners' names, the animal can be part of another word (i.e. "WendyCat", "Noababoa", "Gitonyerhorse" would all work).

If a cache series name has more than one animal, you can use that series more than once...if you have found more than one cache (i.e. "The Hare and Turtle Race Cache #1" and "The Hare and Turtle Race Cache #2" would count as two animals, using the Hare once and the Turtle the other time, so long as you have found both caches).

Likewise, if a cache owner name has more than one animal in it, you can claim each animal in the name for each time you find a cache by that owner (i.e. a cache placed by "CatnDog" can be claimed as two CO names: Cat once, Dog the other...if you find two different caches by that owner that also have different animals in the cache names)

Scientific names are accepted (i.e "Pelecanus") as are family (i.e. "Vipers" or "Felines").

If you have questions or feel that you have a cache/CO name that you are not sure will work...write to us (we are pretty easy).

You can sign the log sheet anytime, but you must qualify prior to posting a "Found It" log on-line.

In your geocaching.com log, you must list your 50 caches and identify the 5 cache owner names and the 5 counties/states or countries.

Below is a partial example from our logs:

"Squirrel" - Squirrel Territory GC1KBNN

"Dog" - Bad Dog GCQNJ9 (State - Califonia)

"Cat" - WendyCat's Scramble - Swish dat Tail GC33NYT (cache owner "Cat" - Wendycat)

"Swan" - From a Swan to the Canary: Custom House GC13NEF (Country - UK)

"Canary" - From a Swan to the Canary: Swan GC13NEE

"Shark" - Shark Fin Slough GCJ7CW (cache owner's name "Owl" - The Owl and the Pussycat)

"Chicken" - Conroe Fast Food Run #1 - Chicken Fillets GC2DTXC (State - Texas)

"Tarpon" - Hungry Tarpon GCMQJX (State - Florida)

"Crested Caracara" - Crested Caracara GC1M6CR

"Crow" - Crow's Nest GCY8M1 (Cache owner: "Chick" - BoydChicks) (County: Los Angeles)

"Watercress Darter" - Watercress Darter Cache GC2NJVX (State: Alabama)

"Canine" - Are you Smarter Than A Canine Cacher GC1R752 (Country: Canada)

Keeping with the theme, we will give this one 5 stars for difficulty(heck - just going through our own logs to make sure we could complete this challenge felt like 5 stars alone). For terrain, the actual cache is around a 1.5 but we will bump it since you probably got caches with higher terrains in order to qualify.

Good Luck!!!!!!
