Continuing the journey of the Joliet History caches you will now be
visiting the site of Joliet's first fire station and off to its
newest version.
The City of Joliet was officially established in June of 1852,
and the Joliet Fire Department was born shortly after, when on
12/12/1853, the City Council passed an ordinance organizing the
Fire Department. Prior to this, a group of volunteers referred to
as the "Bucket Brigade" would respond with buckets to the fire.
Then in 1859 Joliet station house #1 was built. In 1968 this
station was closed and moved to a location on Jefferson street and
then to Clinton street a little way from here. Lastly in 1995 the
station was moved to its current location close to the final cache
location.
To find this cache you must first visit the posted coordinates
which are in front of where the first firehouse was built. The
building is no longer there and was most recently the home of
Chicago Title and Mortgage, which has since moved. You will find
three signs telling you which routes/highways you are one. Place
these three numbers in order from least to greatest to get a 5
digit number. It will be represented as ABCDE.
You will find the final cache, a preform tube, near the current
location of the first fire house at:
N 41 C(A-B).A(E-B)(D/C)
W 088 (E-D)4.(A+4-C)(A-B)4
