Geocache Description:

Laborets Castle Ruins in Goriany

The castle ruins in the medieval village of Goriany was probably the domain of the legendary Prince Laborets, a Slavic chief who ruled along the Uzh River in the Tisza Basin in the 9th Century. The Magyars defeated him in 896 during their migration to the Danube Basin and the formation of the Hungarian Kingdom under Arpad. Laborets initially escaped from the Magyars but was chased down and executed along the banks of the river in Slovakia that now carries his name.

St. Anna’s Rotunda Church is one of the architectural gems of Ukraine dating from the 10th Century in the village of Goriany. Originally only the hexagonal rotunda portion of the church existed. The nave, St. Nicholas Church, was added in the 14th century. The entire inner wall of the rotunda and the eastern wall of the nave are covered in 14th Century murals.
